Watching me, watching you

Katarzyna Kludczynska

"In an attempt  to define herself, Kludczynska often reaches for the camera.  Looking for her identity in her captured mirror reflections she observes multiple selves tumbling in.  Sometimes just two of them show, sometimes four, and sometimes all of them hide behind only one.  In order to avoid studied, staged, fake faces she has submitted herself to other, more universal masks.  This makes her anonymous for the viewer who enters into a certain relation with her without knowing it.  Covering her face hides her identity so that it becomes unrecognizable, although in the production of self-portraits the irony is not lost that she creates masked figures who observe one another.  Some photograph others, while at other times photographic clones take a group picture of themselves.
